Photo a Week Challenge–Contrasting Colors 1/24/19

OOOH, what a FUN challenge. I LOVE all the colors I’ve seen already in the new posts for Nancy Merrill’s weekly challenge.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Contrasting Colors

Nancy has even posted the color wheel as a guide, which is undoubtedly familiar to artists of all types, but I’d never actually seen it before!

Here are some photos of mine I thought of right away, but there may be more to come!!

Interesting just how many I found that are so similar in their contrast….mostly the reds and greens.

But I also found something else.

There are colors that are simply not on that wheel.

Like the color of the water in Fiji against the sand. Or some of my Cobalt glass collection, nestled in their piles of polished white stones. Definitely nothing quite like some of the Coleus plants I have known.

And then there is the color of my grandson’s eyes!

Help, I’m on one of those ROLLS again. Someone stop me!!!!!

OK, OK I’ll Quit!

(Well, just one more to sum it all up.)

A Photo a Week Challenge: The Great Outdoors 1/11/19

Even though I live in the “Great Northwest”, and am surrounded by inconceivable beauty, my first thought in response to Nancy Merrill’s challenge this week was a spectacular scene from a trip to James’s childhood home, Natchez, Mississippi.

Maybe these would be better shared under the theme “Mother Nature is in Charge” but it’s what I thought of so here you go!

I hope you can get a sense of this…the photos sweep from left to right, all of the same scene. That’s the Mighty Mississippi in the background!

A Photo a Week-Horizon 1/3/19

I am blessed…well, maybe cursed…with the ability…well, maybe the compulsion…to find something spiritual and horizon-broadening in almost everything I come across.

Recently we had this wonderful mini-vacation in an Air B and B, with a spectacular view of the horizon.

20181214_14200920181215_100213

I took so many pictures the first few days but it wasn’t until I started editing one of the photos that I discovered something amazing.

The mist eventually cleared to reveal THIS!

I had not even realized that the place we were staying in had basically the exact same horizon view as the one from home…the Olympic Mountain range!!

Downtown Bellevue with the Olympics rising up behind!

I’m still working on what that actually means…something about awareness, appreciation, patience with the weather, and of course, perspective.

Another favorite horizon experience is the one I have when driving between our two homes. It’s close to a five hour drive and friends groan on my behalf when I tell them how often we go. I just don’t get how anyone can not love this drive. The variety of horizons alone make the trip a visual feast for me. There is such a dramatic change in topography along the way and as many times as I’ve driven it, I am still delightfully surprised to come around a corner or up over a hill, only to discover again, a spectacular horizon view.

Disclaimer! Do not take photos while driving!!!

Even the rest stops along my route have great horizon views!

Lastly, way too early one morning recently, when I couldn’t sleep any longer, I decided to go to a local Blueberry Farm and lake to watch the sun climb up over the horizon. I was thrilled with the unexpected view and took way too many photos. I hope you enjoy this slide show.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Things with Wings

Two Wing Stories

Took my grandsons for a fast food breakfast last year as a treat before school. I knew if I put out tidbits, birds would come but I was expecting seagulls and look who we got! It did feel a little like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” but it was also very cool.

Some of the photos are better than others but each shows something particular about Crows, my favorite bird!

And then at our mountain retreat one time on a walk, I came upon this scene.

Something had spooked this rafter of turkeys and they were very anxious to get on the other side of this fence!

So one by one, with what seemed like it should have been monumental effort, they gracefully flew to safety.

Well, one guy was a little distracted I think…

I thought they had all made it over but then spotted a very distressed youngster, running up and down the fence line, frantically gobbling. He was the last one left and I swear he was saying “Hey, wait for me! I’m not sure I can get over! Help!!”

He did finally make it but it was close and clumsy! Whew!

I have waited for so many years to catch turkey flight on camera. This day I hit the jackpot!

vacation photos

No, I am not on vacation…although Nancy Merrill is. So she is skipping a week of her inspiring photo challenges. Her themes are great and the responses she gets are wonderful. Worth visiting her site:

Here’s one I responded to a while back.

A Photo a Week: Whimsical 10/13/18

Since Nancy is gone on vacation, I decided to use THAT as my own theme for today. I actually started writing about our 7,000 mile Epic Roots Road Trip vacation last summer but never got back to it.

Here’s a photo sampling.

October Photo a Day Challenge-10/15/18 Autumn Colors

I published some of these for another challenge already but I am so completely in awe of a particular representation of this theme. It’s close to my house and I look forward to seeing it each year.

I have been calling this the “Wonder Wall”. I drive by other walls like this in my travels around Seattle and Bellevue (Washington), covered with color, but nothing like this one. Most are along the freeways. Here, I park and can walk by, slowly, taking close-up shots. I really love it.

(These are also my first attempts at short videos so I’d appreciate it if you let me know if they work! Turn down your volume and imagine tweeting birds because unfortunately the best light is during rush-hour traffic!)

Just to give you an idea of how many photo ops there are at this wall, these I’m posting today are all different from the ones I already posted on the Lens Artist’s Challenge-Changing/Changeable.

You can see that one here:

A Photo a Week: Whimsical 10/13/18

I love Nancy Merrill’s photography. If you have never visited her site, she’s quite talented.

https://www.nancymerrillphotography.org/

Of course, I adore her subject matter.

She has been sponsoring this Photo a Week challenge and I am inspired by her chosen topics. This week it is “Whimsical”.

My minds reels, but here are a few of mine I thought fit the challenge. (Of course, I may be mixing up the terms Whimsical and Smart Ass…)
