SongLyricsSunday 4-21/19

Haven’t posted for this topic in quite a while but there’s what I thought of with the proposed theme: Seasons/Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall and here on Earth.

It’s just another excuse really for me to share one of my new favorites again.

Can’t seem to get enough of this song (and video).

Life On Earth
The first snow
First winter of my life
I was told it was the height of me
The first dance
Well, the first one that counted
Felt like my blood was built my from crackling lights
Oh this ancient wildness
That we don’t understand
The first sound of a heartbeat
To riots roaring on
This is not love you’ve had before
This is something else
This is something else
This is not the same as other days
This is something else
This is something else
This shouldn’t need to be so fucking hard
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth
It doesn’t need to be the end of you, or me
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth
The first light
First light on the silent shore
Just the ships set anchor me and you
The way home
This is always the way home
So you can rip that map to shreds, my dear
But all we ever wanted
To see miles and miles from here
In the first days in a strange new land
We could be sailors
This is not the love you’ve had before
This is something else
This is something else
This is not the same as other days
This is something else
This is something else
This shouldn’t need to be so fucking hard
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth
It doesn’t need to be the end of you, or me
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth
This shouldn’t need to be so fucking hard
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth
It doesn’t need to be the end of you, or me
This is life on earth
It’s just life on earth

“You’re watching the official music video for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – “Teach Your Children” written by Graham Nash. Originally released on the 1970 CSNY studio album “Deja Vu”, “Teach Your Children” is featured on a 2018 Graham Nash career retrospective entitled “Over The Years…” Get a copy here https://rh-ino.co/overtheyears The video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher. The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960’s, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash’s relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well. “I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting.” – Graham Nash (2018)”

Teach Your Children

Lyrics

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father’s hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can’t know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children’s hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

SongLyricSunday 2/24/19 theme Harmony/Melody/Music

Not sure if my choice this week fits the theme but I do love the melody of this song.

It’s just that the song, and especially the video, mean so much to me. It has been around for a while but I fell all the way in love with it when I heard it on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. (Historically, this TV series has given me so many favorite songs.)

A couple of weeks ago, a baby, in serious trouble, was born into my extended community, and somehow this song gave me comfort. (She’s going to be fine but it was close…way too close.)

My son’s birthday was yesterday, and everything about this song made me think about him…his life…his path.

My favorite lines:

This is not love you’ve had before
This is something else

It describes the love I feel for my children and my grandchildren.

It’s just a beautiful song and video. I hope you enjoy.

SongLyricSunday 2/17/19 theme-mountain, hill

I’ve posted this song before, just don’t remember if it was for this challenge or not.

I’ve always loved the song and all it says, but it wasn’t until pretty late that I found the love of my life, and he just happened to live on his own “ridgetop”.

So now we live in both homes…my humble, ancient, hodgepodge house in the country part of a city. And in his glorious mountain home, all hand-built from recycled, reclaimed, re-purposed materials.

Our Ridgetop!

IMG_4207

Two versions…same song, different photography,,,both lovely!

Ridgetop by Jesse Colin Young

Well, I live on a ridgetop
And, Lord knows, I like it just fine
Where it’s windy and foggy
And quiet most all the time
Yeah, my lawn is pine needles
And my driveway is old funky dirt
And my front pathway markers
Are pieces of granite and chert
Now, my taxes are high
But I don’t believe it’s a sin
I’ve got hundred foot pine trees
That just love to dance in the wind
And a yard full of bushes
That turn into pie in July
Between blue jays and hoot owls
I’ve got twenty-four hour singing sky
Now, when I built my house
I cut six trees to clear out the land
But there’s thirty or more left
And you know that they’re gonna stand
It’s a squirrel sanctuary
They think this woods is their home
And as long as I’m here
I’ll make sure people leave us all alone
Yes, the hill that I live on is steep
And the road’s full of ruts
And the people who live in the flatlands
Think we folks are nuts
But the ruts in my road and the curves
Keep the tourists at bay
And it’s lonesome and peaceful
And you know I like it that way
Now, I work in the city
I think my job is a gas
And I know it’s good for me
To travel and get off my a**
But the nervous parts of each trip
Is the Golden Gate Bridge
And the road like a snake
That will lead me back home to my ridge
Ah, I live on a ridgetop
Yes, I live on a ridgetop
And I like it
And I like it .

SongLyricsSunday 1/20/19 theme “Cry”

https://jimadamsauthordotcom.wordpress.com/2019/01/19/here-we-go-again/

SongLyricSunday is changing but I still love the challenge of finding a song each week to share. This week the first one that came to mind had just been chosen by another responder to the challenge but I listened to both and found them different enough that both are worth the time!

I am a little biased however…..I do love Ms. Baez so…

Cry me a River by Joan Baez
Lyrics
Now you say you’re lonely
You cried the long night through
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
Now you say you’re sorry
For being so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried, cried, cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember, all that you said
You told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now you say, you say you love me
Well, just to prove that you do
Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river
‘Cause I cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, remember, all that you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now, now you say you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Come on and cry, cry, cry me a river, cry me a river
‘Cause I cried a river over you
If my pillow talk, imagine what it would have said
Could it be a river of tears I cried in bed?
So you can cry me a river
Daddy, go ahead and cry that river
‘Cause I cried, how I cried a river over you
How I cried a river over you

SongLyricSunday-1/13/19 Theme-Laughter

Well, because it is Sunday, I am going to tell you about a song that absolutely sold this non-religious, but multi-faith-ed gal on my local Unity Church.

I had not seen my favorite singers for quite a while (and had not attended “church” for quite a while either) but I could not resist attending last week when I heard they were going to be there. They did not perform the song I am going to share, but instead just happened to do my favorite song. Both of which I will share with you now.

Garnett Hundley and Beverly Daugherty are truly amazing singers, in a wide variety of styles. You may want to sample some more of their music for entertainment and inspiration.

The only way I know to include the songs I want to share today are to give you their whole page. When you click play below it will bring up a different song, (Beautiful) but also you can click on each of them by title to hear.

The first song is one that made me belly laugh when I heard it. I think it was a combination of absolute delight, mixed with deep respect for such a wonderful way to address some childhood edicts clearly similar to my own. It’s called Born Innocent.

The second song is the anthem I have always tried to live up to. I hope to be remembered in this way.  This one is called A Life Uncommon (originally by Jewell).

As always, I LOVE your comments!

A Song for Helen, who has given us SongLyricSunday for so long!!

Dear Helen,

I’ve posted this song before but I listen to and watch it almost every day. It reminds me, and lifts me, and helps me with my own frustratingly unexplained physical limitations!!

I wish you the best and want to encourage your return, if and when that works for you.

Love,

ChosenPerspectives

Medicine – Rising Appalachia lyrics

♪ Medicine ♪ official lyrics

Wise men say that rushing is violence
And so is your silence when it’s rooted in compliance
To stand firm in loving defiance, make art your alliance
Give voice to the fire

Move people to the beat of the wind
Gather yourself and begin, to dance the song until it ends
We are winners, champions of the light
Forming in numbers and might, keep the truth close in sight

Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace, I know your face, and I trust your hands
Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace, I know your face, and I trust your hands

Find your teachers in the voice of the forests
Unplug you can’t ignore this, wisdom of the voiceless
Remedies are bountiful and surround us
From the garden to the farthest, prayers made of star dust

Find your healing in the music that calls you
The voice that enthralls you, what do you belong to?
Eyes out! There’s the setting of the sun
Give thanks to each and everyone

The lesson is the Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace I know your face, and I trust your hands
Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace, I know your face, and I trust your hands

I believe in bending backwards and extending
My traps trip back until the message is in action
The yard is feeding, stop stark the disbelieving
‘Cause the garden holds the shards, the medicine is in the
seeds when

We hold tight to our right to protect and
We know our might is ten fold in connection
Our elders hold them bright lights, we protect them
The medicine is evident: the wolf, the hawk, the bear clan

We hold tight to our right to protect and
We know our might is ten fold in connection
Our elders hold them bright lights, we protect them
The medicine is evident: the wolf, the hawk, the bear clan

Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace, I know your face, and I trust your hands
Medicine Woman, Medicine Man
Walking with grace, I know your face, and I trust your hands

SongLyricSunday-theme Season 12/23/18

HUH??? ChosenPerspectives here…Somehow my post got posted with someone else’s post mixed in it. I don’t know how that happened??? (Helen???) If you know how please inform.

This is mine:

I got completely side-tracked with this theme. I can see many great songs have been shared since yesterday, including the very first one I thought of. I always like to go with that first one because it’s often a real old-timer, and I fantasize I am sharing my old music with younger generations.

But something strange happened as I was preparing to post it.

Disclaimer: I rarely post anything political or controversial, unless it’s really important to me, and what I am about to say has nothing with the other people who also chose the same song I thought of. It also has nothing to do with the group doing this song. (The Zombies were brilliant and I’ve included a couple more of their songs at the bottom.)

It’s just that I was shocked and dismayed at the video that came with the song.

At first, I was completely embarrassed, like somehow a whole generation’s blind spots about sexuality were my fault.

Don’t get me wrong. I was THERE! And I remember all of this going on around me. It was the SIXTIES.

But this video shows only one aspect of a powerful movement, the sexual revolution, not all of it.

Now that I’ve had some time, I have been able to shift my perspective, and see that I did not choose literally one of the most demeaning-to-women, music videos I’ve ever seen…(talk about objectifying, harassing, unwanted touching and the whole game of it all).

But rather this video shows just how far we have come since 1968.

So here is my choice for our theme, Season.

Time of the Season byThe Zombies
It’s the time of the season
When love runs high
And this time, give it to me easy
And let me try with pleasured hands
To take you in the sun to (promised lands)
To show you every one
It’s the time of the season for loving
What’s your name?
Who’s your daddy?
(He rich) Is he rich like me?
Has he taken, any time (any time)
(To show) to show you what you need to live
Tell it to me slowly (tell me what)
I really want to know
It’s the time of the season for loving
What’s your name?
Who’s your daddy?
(He rich) Is he rich like me?
Has he taken, any time (any time)
(To show) to show you what you need to live
Tell it to me slowly (tell me what)
I really want to know
It’s the time of the season for loving

  18. I almost forgot today was Sunday because I have been trying to get my daughters room finished for Christmas, it being her Christmas gift and all. But I did remember, and I had no idea what to post until I heard a song on a Christmas play list this morning. It is a twist on the twelve days of Christmas, and by the way I loathe that song, but this one was actually worth listening to all the way, so here is the Twelve Days Of Christmas Straight No Chaser.
    Arranged by Ken Burgomaster

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me,
A partridge in a pear tree.
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me,
Two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.
On the fourth day of Christ
On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five golden rings
Four calling birds, three french hens,
Two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree
On the ninth day of Christmas, (on the eighth day of Christmas)
My true love gave to me (my true love gave to me)
Nine ladies dancing (eight maids a milking)
Eight ladies dancing (seven maids a milking)
Seven ladies dancing (six maids a milking)
    Six ladies dancing (five)
Better not shout, you better not cry,
You better not in a pear tree
    On the ninth, no!
    On the eighth, come on!
On the seventh day of Christmas (deck the halls)
My true love gave to me (with boughs of holly)
Seven swans a swimming (here we come a wassailing)
Six geese a laying (among the leaves so)
    Five golden rings (Fa-la-la-la-la)
    Four calling birds
    Three french hens
Two turtle doves (here we come a wassailing)
The boar’s head in hand bear I (among the leaves so green)
    Bedeck’d with bays
And partridge in a pear tree
On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me
    Eleven pipers piping (ding)
    Ten lords a leaping (dong)
    Nine ladies dancing (ding)
    Eight maids a milking (dong)
    Seven swans a swimming (ding)
    Six geese a laying (dong)
    Five golden rings
    Four calling birds
    Three french hens
    Two turtle doves
And Rudolph the red nosed reindeer!
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me
I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay,
And when it’s dry and ready, my dreidel I shall play
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel (hey, 12 days of Christmas)
(what? 8 days of Hanukkah. It’s a Christmas medley)
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me
Do do do do doot do (do de do de do de do de do de)
Do do do do doot do (do de do de do de do de do de)
On the twelfth day my true love gave to me
Twelve drummers drumming like Olympus above the Serengeti
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba oh
Eleven pipers piping, ten lords a leaping (Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba oh)
Nine ladies dancing they were dancing for me
Eight maids a milking they were milking just for me

I had Christmas down in Africa
I had Christmas down in Africa (five golden rings)
I had Christmas down in Africa (five golden rings)
I had Christmas down in Africa (five golden rings)
Couldn’t take the halls into the things we never had
Do do do do doot do (do de do de do de do de do de)
