Song Lyric Sunday 1/15/17

The theme this week for our Song Lyrics Challenge is the parent/child relationship.

Tell you what, I LOVE this weekly Song Challenge because I get to share favorite music of mine and learn so many new songs!! Visit Helen’s site (above) for today’s responses! Some really amazing music every week!

I have had the privilege in my lifetime of parenting many, MANY children. Starting with my younger sisters. when we were growing up. Of course, I had no clue what I was doing and was just a child myself, but to the best of my ability, mother them I did!

Then being pregnant with Pamela, before she was even born, I parented her in my mind (and belly) for that nine months, knowing I might have to give her up to be raised by more available, qualified and less damaged parents.

With Michael, I was 100% in from day one! Though his version of his childhood and mine might be different, I doubt he would tell you that he wasn’t my top priority, always.

Then came a foster daughter and later still, three step children, and I loved them each totally and did my very best to contribute to their lives for the relatively short time I had them (almost 13 years).

For a period of 25 years, as my seva, I was a Professional Childbirth Attendant…sort of like a “doula”…although my certification was specific to assisting a Midwife in a home delivery. I had also taught Childbirth Education classes and studied Pre and PeriNatal Psychology for many years so the kind of childbirth I attended was not limited to home deliveries. Instead of doing only the jobs a Doula will typically cover, I gained a reputation as someone who could “mother the mother” during Labor and delivery, especially when we knew going in that it was a high risk circumstance (health issues, single or underage mom, rape, incest, adoption, and more). I attended more than 250 births.

And the last group of “children” for whom I had the honor of claiming the title Mom, were my clients…hundreds of them (many that overlapped with the category just above because I was included in the births of their babies).

This last category is difficult to describe without misunderstanding but the very short version is this. As a Psychotherapist trained in Developmental Psychology, I believed that all kinds of therapies involve transference*, both positive and negative. And that the nature of the therapeutic relationship is not unlike that of a parent and child. So we acknowledged and used the positive transference that can happen when a high trust level exists between client and therapist. In other words, by contract, and within a very specific and safe structure, I “parented” my clients…or more accurately, I “mom-ed” the “little kid” part of my clients. In some cases, I became their Mom, for a piece of therapeutic work and some, for longer periods of time. There are even a handful with whom I made a life-long agreement to retain that title. I take that commitment completely seriously, as do they, and even though I am mostly professionally retired now and they are complete adults, they remain a part of my family.

My primary Mentor, much like a “mom” to me, used to say “You can never have too many healthy Mom’s” (and Dad’s too). My mother died when I was so young but I have been blessed with many in my adult life.

And now, my son and his two boys have moved in with us and I have the ultimate honor of being Grandma (well, they call me Dammaw). Grandparenting is just parenting with huge benefits…and no, I don’t mean that thing a lot of grandparents say about getting to do the good stuff and then sending them home to their parents for the more difficult parts.

Once again, I am in 100 %!!

I remember seeing a movie when I was very young called “Cheaper by the Dozen”. I decided right then it would be a dream come true to have that many kids! I thought I might be good at it.

Now, I could not possibly count the number of parent/child relationships I have been lucky enough to have, but definitely more than a Dozen.

William Blake said ‘The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom…You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough.’

I’ll let you know when I find out….

*transference-the redirection to a substitute, usually a therapist, of emotions that were originally felt, and left unfinished, in childhood

Unfocused

Not sure how to do this. I may be horning in on a weekly challenge I wasn’t invited to but I found it so compelling to see the topic “unfocused”. I read it immediately following an ice cold photo session out on my deck in the pitch black.

When I woke up this morning, the full (or almost full) moon was setting in a position I had never seen before from my house. I know this doesn’t mean it hasn’t, just that I am a night person and am rarely awake to see a Moonset in the first place, especially in the dead of winter.

And I had never actually seen the moon in all these colors, more typical of what a sunset brings!

I came in the house thrilled with what I had witnessed but so disappointed that all my shots were “unfocused”.

And then, when I started my morning ritual of looking at my Reader, Lisa’s post on unfocused was the first one I saw.

So here are a few of my unfocused photos from this morning’s icy Moonset!

Not even sure what that building is in the foreground. Wish I had a real telephoto. This is just my old Canon Powershot. I’ve always wondered how photos are taken where the moon or sun looks outrageously huge! This moon looks like a giant fireball about to land in downtown Bellevue!

The Hummer feeder was frozen 5 nights in a row. I always put out a warm one at first light but one of the mornings there was a tiny bird glued to the feeder rail. I gently touched his back and he didn’t move. I thought in horror he had frozen there in the night. But my second touch sent him falling into a downward spiral. Luckily, he “woke up” and shot off into the sky. That semi-hibernation thing Hummingbirds do in the cold is amazing!

img_8423
Here he is, just sitting, waiting for me to go get my camera…me thinking he has frozen himself to the feeder…

This is the Head Interloper on my morning Crow Feeding time. I think he waits here until he hears me CAW! Then intrudes like crazy on my 30 year long Crow-feeding routine!! He’s a real bully!

I’d be madder at him if I didn’t think his knobby knees were so cute!!

In the meantime, instead of assuming their usual Guard Duty Posts,

…the three cats have decided even inside the house is too cold for them.

They all found toasty places to weather this below freezing weather.

I think this is cheating but I thought of 3 songs and wasn’t really sold on any of them as the Song so I googled and found this site.

I love what the person wrote as the lead in to their list of the 10 best Winter Blizzard Songs!

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/top-winter-songs/

(Three of the songs I thought of are on this list.)

I might have to add this though..

Lyrics to Heartless by Heart (hmmm, reminds me of my former husband)
from Google Lyrics

The doctor said come back again next week
I think that you need me
All she did was cry
She wanted to die doctor when can you see me
There’s a guy out there
Seems like he’s everywhere
It just ain’t fair

Heartless heartless
Never never out of control
Heartless heartless
Ya keep on sinnin’
In the name of a rock and roll
Heartless heartless
Ya think he’s gonna bare his empty soul
He never realizes the way love dies
When you crucify it’s soul

Late night, in the penthouse room
The fire is burnin’
The shadows are warm
She lay in his arms, answers his yearning
D’ya think she understand the lie of his plans
Her eyes are filled with sand

Heartless heartless
Never never out of control
Heartless heartless
Ya keep on sinnin’
In the name of a rock and roll
Heartless heartless
He thinks it’s so cool to be cold
He never realizes the way love dies
When you crucify it’s soul

Heartless heartless
Never never out of control
Heartless heartless
Ya keep on sinnin’
In the name of a rock and roll
Heartless heartless
Ya think he’s gonna bare his empty soul
You never realizes the way love dies
When you crucify it’s soul

Yeah, didn’t you never realize

Crucify me

Now, I have to go back to holding my vigil. James is in Spokane, trying to outrun a huge Snoqualmie Pass snow dump so he can get home to the “West side” (of our mountains) today. The skiers will be thrilled but the travelers, not so much!!

Happy Winter!

Names for WPC 1/7/17

Names

She goes by several names…the Goddess, the Queen, “Diana”, or many just call her YIKES!!

Her official name is Extatosoma Tiaratum

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extatosoma_tiaratum

In the 7 or so years I have raised them, she is my biggest and longest living Giant Spiny Australian Leaf Bug so far (almost 2 years) and she is really amazing. He body is fat with eggs and if I’m not careful I will have a huge invasion of babies next summer!

You can read more about these amazing creatures on these posts…

Back to those BUGS!

As for her REAL NAME, I simply lower my head and call her Your Majesty!

A Swing and a Miss!!

OK you win some and you lose some. I get that. But it is so much harder to lose when you have been absolutely convinced that THIS time, it would be a WINNER for SURE!!

I believe that my duties as a grandmother are specifically limited. I do NOT get to “parent” my two amazing grandsons. Julius, who is 13 and Luca, 10 (for another week) depend on me to be that other adult in their lives that has the luxury of coming closer to unconditional love than either of their parents do. Even though they live with their father in my home, I do not have to crack the “do your homework” or “clean your room” whips. That’s their Dad’s job.

My self-imposed duties are clear to me though. I get to love them. I get to watch out for their safety. And my favorite, I get to teach them stuff, especially about our family’s history and traditions…

At Christmas time, it is not part of my job to be the one to give the “big” present each year. Again, that’s my son’s place and I never want to compete or even accidentally outshine him with his boys.

So I go for obscure, non-traditional gifts (no video games) and whenever possible, non-material. Gifts from Gramma are unexpected (sometimes unwanted) and always a bit weird. That’s OK with me. And I know some will land and some will fail! But most will be remembered.

Examples:

3 years ago, I made each a personal (Shutterfly) photo book of their lives so far. I think it got about a C+/B- grade from the boys.

2 years ago, I made them personalized “treasure boxes”. (They’ve always liked that concept). These boxes contained charms and totems and stickers that represented events in their lives. Each box also had a tiny tablet and mini pencil so they could guess, and then write down, what each token in and on their box signified. There was a prize for whoever guessed the most symbols. (Hey, do I know how to harness sibling rivalry or what??)

Last year, I gave them (all of us really) a family outing to a very cool local place. Maybe you have something like this in your area. It’s called the Boarding House. I have to admit I have some pretty strong judgments about how inundated our children are these days with all things electronic and technical…especially the whole video gaming addiction…so when I discovered the Boarding House, I was thrilled. It is a store/restaurant that sells almost every “board game” ever invented…not a single electronic game in the place! You can even go in and pick some games to try out at your table while enjoying a damn good meal. (Think the highest class “tavern food” EVER!)

This gift was NOT a hit because when they opened it, they had no idea what it was. They could not even grasp the concept of a game store without their coveted new video games for sale. (not an addiction, my ass!) It took 10 months for them to finally be willing to use their hefty Gramma gift certificate for dinner and games at the Boarding House. I’d say, eventually, this gift earned approximately a B-…but it was like pulling teeth.

This year, I thought I might finally earn an “A”. Oh well, best laid plans and all.

My son likes to expose the boys to a variety of different and special experiences in their lives. Wild and different restaurants. And last year, he bought them 3 piece suits and took them to the SYMPHONY!

IMG_6285.JPG
I thought they looked a bit Mafioso but maybe that’s fitting given their strong Italian heritage!

Remember I said it was my self-imposed duty to teach them about Family Traditions? So, I combined my son’s determination to expose them to new things, and my childhood (and then Michael’s) tradition of weird food in our Christmas stockings, to provide a Christmas morning experience like no other. I knew it would be a HIT!! The boys love all the survival-type tv shows, especially when eating gross stuff is involved. So I did a lot of googling, shopped around, prepared a breakfast table, with a specific food challenge for each! (No crickets or ants involved…we are a Bug Household after all!) see

Here’s what they arrived to find for breakfast.

img_8268
mmmm, yummy!

The deal was, they had to read the research I printed about their given fruit, take at least one bite and then go back to the printed material to find a clue for a treasure hunt to their real present. A gift card to their favorite place to shop hidden around the house.

Great idea, eh? Expose them to something new. Teach them something old. I was so sure….

I think I earned maybe a D- !!

Oh well. The hidden $50 Amazon cards went some distance to save the day…

Song Lyric Sunday 1/1/2017

Lousy video and the lyrics are not actually related to my current frame of mind but it’s still a great song and, it is actually Chicago in July, 1971. I would have been newly pregnant with baby Michael!

Story for me behind this song is that is was the one my son’s father and I claimed as “ours”, to the degree that we had “only the beginning” engraved onto our wedding bands. The words were so true for us at the time. BIG (but young) love there!

photoscan-2
Rick and me stopping at a gas station flower stand for my wedding bouquet on the way to be married in my childhood church in Pacific Beach. What you might not be able to see is that my dress is handmade (and BLUE, not WHITE) from a maternity pattern…yep, we were very pregnant!

Ironic, given how quickly the marriage ended, leaving me alone to raise my 3 year old.

But you know, that was also a beginning in so many ways. I really started becoming my best self after Michael’s father left and with lots of work, I actually became grateful for how that beginning came about.

As sweet Jennifer Day, from  The Iconophile said recently “a mess is full of potential”.

Was Pandora Framed?

Me and my Mikey, a couple of years into our new beginning!!

So no excuses…get back out there in the world and DO something. Either that, or stay in and finish your damn BOOK! (By the way, that was to ME, not you…unless you needed a swift kick in the patootie also!)

Beginnings by Chicago
Lyrics

When I’m with you
It doesn’t matter where we are
Or what we’re doing
I’m with you, that’s all that matters

Time passes much too quickly
When we’re together laughing
I wish I could sing it to you, whoa oh
I wish I could sing it to you

Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
Mostly I’m silent, hmm
Silent

When I kiss you
I feel a thousand different feelings
A cover of chills
All over my body
And when I feel them
I quickly try to decide which one
I should try to put into words, woah oh
Try to put into words

Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh

Only the beginning
Only just the start
Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh woah oh oh oh
