First off, you are quite beautiful and I don’t know why it took you so long to realize that.Next, I am impressed with your ability to post such “revealing” photos- good for you. I look in the mirror and pull my face up and see a woman years younger, but it is what it is, the wrinkles, the sagging, the new lines it seems everyday, the age spots on my weathered hands. Not so bad I figure, it’s what’s on the inside that matters 🙂

I am inspired by your willingness to be vulnerable and authentically yourself in both these pieces . I love how you took this photograph wih your reflection in the mirror. I see you looking at yourself with kindness and gentle care.
I delight in getting to ‘see’ you, to have an image of you to go with your writings. I see the activist who went to the South in the 60’s and the woman who cares deeply for her grandsons and their future.
I have a huge smile in seeing the photograph of you with Bonnie Raitt! And delight in knowing that we are of the same age.
I find aging in our culture, one that idolizes youth, very challenging. Especially if one carries any vestiges of ‘not being good enough’ and all its variations. So often I look at myself in the mirror and have a sense of disconnect between my outer self and who I experience myself as being. It feels quite disconcerting. I feel so much younger internally, more expansive than how I experience my body, more constricted by the physical challenges it has.

It was fun to see you write this to Arati. I was just thinking that it would be great if the two of you met each other. Since I know you both I think it is safe to say that I agree that the two of you would be buddies.
Oops it sent too soon but now I’ve forgotten the rest of my thought. Ya and then there is THAT part of aging!

Beautiful posts! I don’t think it’s shocking or uncomfortable, on the contrary it is reassuring and empowering. In the last couple of decades we’ve been made to fear aging to such a degree that the slightest sign of it is supposed to make us panic and rush to get rid of it, be ashamed of it and spend pots of gold to erase it, and if we don’t do that we’re prompted to hide from public view and from the mirror. Some of the things which women (and some men) do to themselves to stop appearing to age is what is truly shocking and uncomfortable. Your act of sharing yourself is powerful. It’s natural activism for the self and for those who allow themselves to be inspired by it. As we age our character shows on our faces more and more – you are beautiful inside and out. Thank you!
